Note

Susan Smith has written:

This is a very sad story, Sarah Richards was born at Brookfield on the 5th June 1845 and married John Bell at Boral in 1878, which would make her 33 years old at the time. As you can see the extract of the marriage certificate has very little info on it. Sarah was committed to Gladesville Asylum where she remained until she was transferred to Stockton Mental Asylum a short while before her death in 1913. She is buried at Stockton General Cemetery.

When Sarah was committed her two young sons were brought up by the worth family at Coolongolook. Both Mary Annes were living at Coolongolook so I'm guessing that either her sister Mary Ann or her mother were there to help with the raising of the children. One of the sons must have been quite young as she was still breast feeding at the time of being committed. John Bell seems to have disappeared off the radar about this time. We haven't been able to find him as yet, so know nothing about him or his family. I do have the original Grandville doc's but they are very hard to read the attached records are a true translation from the files. At some stage I will apply to obtain her case records from the Stockton Asylum. I was told that one of her sons did visit his mother frequently.
