The Elizabeth Elliott / Hillier confusion: Both the baptism and birth records show her name as Elizabeth Elliott Godwin. However, in all other records that I have located Elizabeth’s middle name is Hillier - see BDM index info where she is almost always recorded as Elizabeth H, and never with an ‘E’. You will see that her headstone also shows Hillier.

Hillier is a surname that appears in records at / near Malmesbury in Wiltshire (in the early 1800s) which makes it likely that Hillier was always intended as Elizabeth’s middle name. It is my theory that George, who would have had a heavy west country accent, probably pronounced the name as Hellier, and if you say the word with that accent, it could easily sound like Elliott!

Mary Ann was baptised at Kincumber (CoE) on 9/8/1857 and her birth registration took place at Gosford on 19/8/1857. The informant was Mary Ann, GGG’s wife, but Mary Ann was illiterate - she signed the register with her X mark. Therefore, regardless of what name Mary Ann told the minister and the court official, she would not have known what they actually wrote down.
