After hospitalisation in England, he returned to Australia where he was discharged as medically unfit in June 1919. For the rest of his life he suffered the effects of shrapnel wounds and poison gas from his service on the Western Front. He was described as a tall good looking man but towards the end of his life attempts at communication were described as "like talking to a vegetable".
