John received some notice from the press in 1922 when he set what was regarded as a record. It was reported that:

"An "A" pass in all possible subjects, English, Commercial, Arithmetic, Shorthand, Business Principles and Commercial Geography - such was the record of Jack Hughes, the Dux of Hamilton Evening School at the last Evening School examination. Besides the foregoing he passed two exams in typewriting which is taken at the Hamilton E.S. as an extra subject. Jack Hughes is now employed as a clerk at the BHP Steel Works. He also takes a keen interest in sport, is a good swimmer and plays both tennis and football."
