Birth

According to his marriage certificate the details of his mother and father are Charles and Catherine FRAZER. However, daughter, Jean Gregory (nee Mason) has stated that he may have been adopted by Miss Catherine Mason and that he was born as Crow or Du Boise. He was definitely raised in Sydney.

A search of the NSW BDM Index revealed the following entry:

14749/1882 MASON WILLIAM M WILLIAM CHARLOTTE A This requires further investigation.

17/9/00 I posted a request for someone to lookup BDM index in Victoria and I received the fololowing reply

"Hello.

The Birth/Death/Marriage index for Victoria 1788-1921 shows no birth for a William Mason with a mother named Catherine Frazer.

I have checked the NSW, TAS, WA references also.

Mike."

19/9/00 A search of the NSW BDM Index revealed only one male entry for CROW in 1882. It was:-

18010/1882 CROW HERBERT L TOM ALICE

There were three male entries for CROWE -

7292/1882 CROWE ARTHUR E ARTHUR CATHERINE 9957/1882 CROWE FRANCIS E FRANCIS E MARY F 25295/1882 CROWE TIMOTHY JOHN JANE

There were no male entries for Dubois nor Du Bois.

8/8/2004 I have today checked the BDM records for Victoria C1882 and a couple of years before that. I can confirm the above email in that there is no record of a birth of William MASON C1882. I can also record that I could not find any record of a Charles Mason marrying a Catherine Fras(z)er in the couple of years prior to 1882.

13/9/2004 Maybe a breakthrough! The following is a supposition on my part, but it is interesting circumstantial evidence. An R.E. Cox was a witness at his marriage. An R.E. Cox married an Ada A. Mason. An Ada A. Mason was born to an Amelia vide the following NSW Birth Index entry:

7922/1869 MASON ADA A AMELIA BRAIDWOOD There is also the following entry of another birth to an Amelia as follows:

889/1882 MASON WILLIAM H AMELIA SYDNEY It could be that the 'H' here is an error in the transcription. If these entries are related and relevant, then Bill could be the sister of Ada.

Jan 2007 I have now obtained the B/C 889/1882 and it is highly unlikely that this certificate is relevant.
