Citation details: 14 March 2011 Text: In part: "My Mother was shocked realizing that her parents were not married. Naturally she couldn't talk to them about it as they were both died. I don't think she ever got over that. These days it is the norm!! So why weren't they married? Well Hugh had previously married Agnes Ingall of Maitland in 1881 and had a son Herbert in 1882. However according to gossip a year or two afterwards she ran off with a dentist/doctor. I assume that it was Dr Edmund Kavanaugh and she supposedly divorced (could you do that in 1881?) and married Edmund in 1884. So did Mabel Lillian Gore know anything about Hugh's previous marriage and why wait until 1924 to get married. They already had two children, my Mother and Aunty Phil. If they were divorced in 1884 he could have easily marriage Mabel prior to 1907 when Phil was born? According to my Father (Raymond) Mum recalls them going away for a weekend in 1924. Something they never did and this is when they married although she didn't know that at the time. Is it possible that Agnes and Hugh infact didn't get divorced until 1924? and that was the reason they did not marry earlier." |
