Quality of data: questionable evidence
This marriage ended in tragedy a few months later. Betty's desire to work part-time led to a series of arguments with Norman and also with the woman with whom they were living. Betty decided to leave. Giving evidence to the Coroner's Inquest, Betty said,
"In bed, he asked if I were still going to leave. I replied that I was. He said there was only one thing to do. He got out of bed and dressed and said he was going up the street. He returned 10 minutes later carrying a rifle in pieces. When he started to put the gun together, I went down to my mother's place. I was half way down the street and I heard the shot. I saw my father and mother and told them. I returned to my mother. ... He told me several times he was going to do away with himself. He told me that he had something on his mind. When I asked, he said he didn't know what."
