"It has been a while since I last contacted you about my Schmitzer family history, but I have not been idle. With wonderful help from people from Rootsweb and the Gow family I have learned a lot about the past lives of the Schmitzers. I know a little more about my GG Grandmother Catherine Frey ( this is the correct spelling by the way) after obtaining many of the relevant family birth, marriage and death certs. Their children's birth certs. all state that George and Catherine were married at East Maitland in1855/6 and the Schneider/Frey marriage cert. you recommended I obtain was revealing, even though it was obviously transcribed and extremely brief. I know that they did not speak English and have been told that the Dahenfeld dialect could account for the Schneider/Schmitzer confusion. Coincidentally, the marriage witnesses were JOHAN Schneider and Wilhelmina KOPP ( George's brother was Johannes and his sister in law Rosina Kopp) It states that Catherine was a widow......so this would also complicate my search. In short, at this stage, I believe that this is their marriage. I have really enjoyed reading and learning about the times they lived in, both here and in Germany, so it has been a really worthwhile experience for me."
