THE STOKES FAMILY

The STOKES family in Hornsby Shire originated with William Bryant STOKES and his wife Ellen (nee FEAR). William was born in Bristol in the west of England in 1834 and his wife in Somerset, England, in 1836. They migrated to Australia separately in the late 1850s. Here they married and their son Frederick William was born at Waverley, New South Wales, in 1863. There was also a daughter, Emmie, who later became Mrs Ralph CALOV of Arcadia. There were also three other sons, Alfred, William and Walter, who all lived and worked in the Asquith area. Stokes Street Asquith commemorates the family name. It runs through what was the Stokes orchard. The Asquith High School occupies some of the same land. Pioneers of the Hornsby Shire, p214
