Monday 26th October 1908 FUNERAL OF SERGEANT DOYLE - The funeral of the late Sergeant James Doyle of "A" Company, 4th Australian Infantry Regiment, who was killed at the Dyke on Friday morning, took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Cemetery at Sandgate. The procession, which was arranged four deep, was one of the largest seen in Newcastle, extending along half the length of Melville Street. The funeral procession was headed by the 4th Australian Infantry Regiment band playing the "Dead March". Immediately after the gun carriage, on which was placed the coffin, came the deceased's relatives and friends, the chief mourners amoung whom were Mr & Mrs William Doyle (parents), Michael (brother) and Katie (sister). Then came members of the "A" Company, 4th Regiment, Irish Rifles, St. Mary's School Cadets, Scottish Rifles, Signalling Corps, Army Medical Corps, Australian Garrison Artillery, and Naval Brigade. The officers present were: Major Paton, Major Start, Captain Scobie, and Lieutenants Robb, Timbury, Street, Byrne, Ellis and McKensey. Lieutenant Solling, of A. Company, had charge of the military arrangements. Lieutenant-Colonel Ranclaud was detained out of town, and could not attend. In the general procession were represenatives of all the football clubs, athletic bodies, and sailing clubs in the district, and tesified to the esteem in which, the young sergeant was held. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. Father Finnigan, and at the close of the ceremony a party of 19 members of the deceased's regiment, under the command of Sergeant Garvin, assisted by Sergeant R Cox, fired three volleys over the grave. Neumerous messages of sympathy were received by the bereaved parents, and wreaths were sent by...(unable to read as blurred).
