Obituary.

THE LATE MR. JOSEPH BOOTH.

Mr. JOSEPH BOOTH, one of the most widely known and highly respected residents of Parramatta, breathed his last on Wednesday afternoon at his residence, Hunter-street. His death, which was due to congestion of the lungs, from which he had been suffering for four or five months, was not unexpected. On Friday (yesterday) week, indeed, the deceased gentleman had his children and relatives called together, and, in anticipation of passing away, bade them all good-bye. At the time of his death Mr. Booth was 68 years of age. He was the eldest son of the late Joseph Booth, who for so many years carried on business in Parra-matta as a tailor, and he received his education at the school kept by Mr. J. S. Staff. Apprenticed to the late Mr. John McManis, he ultimately succeeded to his wheelwright's business, and also married the daughter of Mr. McManis. With the exception of a temporary sojourn at the Fish River before his marriage, Mr. Booth spent the whole of his life in Parramatta. He had eleven children, nine of whom are now living, viz., four sons and five daughters. One of his sons is in the Railway Department, another is in the Postal service, and a third in the Australian Joint Stock Bank, Sydney. Mr. Booth took for many years a prominent part in nearly all useful and philanthropical movements initiated in Parramatta. He was twice Mayor of the borough, and carried out the duties of his office with conscientiousness and zeal. For fifteen consecutive years he served his native town as an alderman ; and he also was a member of the Municipal Council of Prospect and Sherwood, since the year 1875. He was Mayor of that Municipality in 1878. For the last nine years Mr. Booth held the office of Treasurer of the Borough of Parramatta—a position which, it will be remembered he resigned about a week or two ago. At the time of his death he held the same position in the Municipal Council of Prospect and Sherwood. Mr. Booth, who was a most consistent and earnest Christian, and filled several important offices in connection with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, of which he was a member. He was a trustee of the new Church, a class leader, and was con-nected with the Macquarie-street Sunday-school for a period of over 40 years, during 30 years of which he acted as Superintendent of the school with entire acceptance. No man was more attentive to or more zealous in the execution of his duty than the late Mr. Booth ; during the whole of his lengthened connection-with the Macquarie-street School, he was never absent from his post save on two occasions. The deceased was essentially gentle, earnest and unassuming ; of truly pious disposition, and a zealous member of the Wesleyan Church ; yet he never permitted his zeal to degenerate into narrow-mindedness or bigotry, or lead him into intolerance. He was truly one of these who do good by stealth, and there are few men of whom it can be more accurately said that he never lived for himself. During his illness, Mr. Booth was attended by Drs. Waugh and Brown, and although he did not suffer very much pain, he became towards the end completely worn out.

THE FUNERAL

His funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, and was very largely attended. The services at the Wesleyan Church were conducted by the Revs. J. Clifton, Oram, J. Caldwell, and P. J. Stephen, the first-named gentleman delivering an address setting forth the worth and consistency of the deceased, and alluding to the good work done by him in connection with the Church. The choir rendered hymns 711, 246, and 700, which had been specially selected by Mr. Booth for the occasion some days prior to his death. The same clergyman officiated at the grave, Mr. Caldwell offering up a special prayer. The attendance at the funeral was very large indeed, and testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Among those present were the Mayor and all the aldermen of the Borough of Parramatta, and several of the members of the Prospect and Sherwood Council. . We also noticed the Rev. P. S. Young (Primitive Methodist), Messrs. A. Payten, P. Miller, Hunt, J. Y. Mills, Manton, W. Fullagar, Gilbert Smith and many other prominent citizens.

MOTIONS OF EULOGY AND CONDOLENCE.

Alderman Hugh Taylor hatt given notioe that he will at the next meeting of the Parramatta Borough Council move 1. That this Council expresses its deep regret at the death of tbe late Alderman Joseph Booth, who for many years occupied a seat at the Council table, who was twice Mayor of the Borough, and up to a recent date filled also the office of Treasurer; and that—as by his unassuming deportment, honesty of purpose, kindly disposition, and the zeal he ever displayed in advocating the interests of his native town, he endeared hinmlf to the aldermen with whom he was so long aisxdsted —the Council places upon record an acknowledgement ot his worth and its sorrow at his decease. 2. And, contingent on the above,—That His Worship the Mayor be respectfully requested to cause a letter of condolence to be transmitted to the widow of the deceased Alderman, embracing the substance of the proceeding resolution.
