Hello Stuart

I have found two newspaper reports regarding William GREAVES alias GREGORY.

They might not tell you anymore than you already know. The robbery took place at Tupton and his accomplice was Joseph BEDFORD.If you can find any records pertaining to this Joseph I thought it may point you in the right direction. He maybe from the Chesterfield area. I'll also see if I can find were Miss LORDS was baptised.

I couldn't find any court records (if they exist) as the trial took place at Crown Court Derby Saturday 23rd March 1833 before Sir J.B. Bosanquet.

The report appears in the Derbyshire Mercury Wed Mar 27th 1833 and The Derbyshire Courier/Chesterfield Gazette.(can't seem to find a date reference for this)but it was within the week after the trial.

When i'm at Matlock again I'll check for any Crown Court records or scan the papers around that time to see if there is any metion of the robbery.

Kind Regards

Angela (LEE) Eckington U.K.

Stuart,

I couldn't help myself and did a quick search of my available resources to see what I could find: Convicted for 7 years in 1833 he would be free in 1840. There is a Certificate of Freedom No 40/ 0656 for him dated 9 April 1840 (SRNSW 4/4357, 1005) which, if you don't have, you should get it to see if it has helpful info. Oddly, if he was married in 1838 there should be a permission to marry for him as he was still serving time. However, on Lesley's CD he does not appear there. When he arrived he gained a Ticket of Leave No 55/1 in 1834 for the Cassilis region (SAG, 4/4229, 892) . In the 1837 muster he was working for Hannibal H Mcarthur at Parramatta. Given your other circumstantial evidence though, I'd say he may well be your man. There were other William Gregorys/Greaves/Grieves, but they do not match your other evidence.

Maybe not much help but there may be further clues amongst that for you.

Here are the birth dates I have on file. The Gregory family attended "Church of St John the Evangelist" C of E, Cooks Hill, Newcastle, Newcastle City Library has the church records on microfilm for Marriages and Birth, they are scanned copies of the original registers so are in date order. Some time towards 1890 the family changed to "St Augustine's" C of E at Merewether, only the marriage records are available for this church.

In the Federal Directory of Newcastle & District 1901 page 180/181 Religions. William Gregory was a Lay Representative for the Parish of Merewether in the 3 session of the Twelfth synod of the Diocese of Newcastle held at Newcastle in May, 1900. - (You might already have this information). I've asked Maree if there's anything to confirm it was "our William" (1839 - 1931)
