Thanks, Stuart,

First, my sister told me she didn't like my answering by inserting - to write an entire email. (That's in discussion about our Mother who is rapidly going downhill.) However, I find it easy to insert, change colour and thus refer to specific comments.

On 15/03/2005, at 12:14 AM, Stuart Gregory wrote:

With regard to William and Sarah, you write as though you have not seen the certificate of marriage (transcribed).

No, I hadn't seen the transcription. I have the actual copy from the register. Word is clearly widower next to William. The next one certainly has a "drag line" after the last w in widow but isn't clearly widower.

The handwritten Alex has a scrawl next to it which could be a shortened form of the name Alexander.

You also write about Sarah arriving by ship under the name Nicholson. I am not aware of any information about how or when she arrived; whether she was a free settler or a convict. All I know is what is contained in her Death Certificate, a copy of which I have attached for your information. Actual year probably not known by John, the informant.Based on this certificate she would have arrived in Australia around 1834.

Shipping reel 1286

Sarah arrived 31 Oct 1837 on "Andromache". age 25 b 30 Oct 1812 Egremont Parish, Cumberland

house servant, Episcopalian

Protection of James BELSHER and family

(He was 30, - farmer from Comber Down, Nthn Ireland, + wife, Mary 27 + 4 chn.)

Ian Gregory puts her as being under the protection of Rev William Sowerby. He was on the ship but I wrote the above. Hence I've asked Philip to check this reel.

If our William Gregory is not William Greaves, then how did our William come to Australia and when?

This is the task: I believe we have two definite facts. Marriage in Manchester on 30 March 1828 then possible bits. Next fact is marriage in Sydney 20 August 1838.

Shipping records could be read in case William came as a ship's carpenter. He might have come steerage and we'll never find it if the ship's logger merely wrote "and 43 steerage passengers". He might have come, as William b 1839 stated as informant at death, "64 years" from 1893. To read the records requires lots of time. One day ....

At the birth of your William in 1839, the abode was Fort St which is near Harbour Bridge.

To muddy the waters a little bit more, it is my understanding that a William Greaves (Grieve) of the Lloyds applied to marry a free settler in 1845 in Parramatta. This was around the time the second child Eliza was born of the William Greaves you have researched. Are there two William Greaves? Not to the extent of confusing the issue. Was there a Willeam Greaves and a William Grieve both transported on the Lloyds? Maybe they arrived at different times?

NSW/Vic/Tas/WA - 433 matches for all BMDs for GREAVES 1788 - 1888

modified to NSW - 140 matches

modified to NSW + William - 8 matches

Only relevant - marriage 1841, birth William J 1843, death 1875

William GRIEVES in NSW - 4 records

William GRIEVE in NSW - 10 records one being William GRIEVE = Ann NOWLAN Parramatta Presbyterian in 1845.

I don't know when the above William GRIEVE arrived.

Perhaps we need to get this certificate: V1841542 25C/1841 GREAVES WILLIAM CONOLLY SUSAN CT

I copied this from register yesterday. That's what I was quoting. However, the copy is poor. I told Philip last night that it would have to be redone if needed for the book. In this morning's light, after Maitland, it could be Bond T of L.

Also, as a bit of background and an aside, I attach a photo each of William and Ann's grave and William and Sarah's grave both at Sandgate cemetery, Newcastle.

Obviously some work is needed here on a working bee!!! Thanks for these!

Best wishes,

Jan

Dear Stuart, I have the family info and I don't know why Sarah doesn't show. Here is her individual entry. I've used the IGI plus Whitehaven Record Office to go back a few generations from Dennis and Mary. I've also gone the other way and traced Sarah's siblings and their chn. Should have written to one I found but haven't got "round tuit". I actually haven't been able to unzip but I'll ask son, David in the morning and email if I can't. Thanks for sending files. Sarah was baptised in Egremont Church. We attended a morning service there. However, the actually building isn't the one in which she would have gone. The one there now was built, from memory in abt 1870. We then went to St Bees Church which is the actual building in which Dennis Nicholson was baptised in 1789.
