In part:

"JC and WT's parents were Joseph Bates Esq and Lydia who were both born in Ireland in about 1803 and 1808. They died in Qld in 1883 and 1885 respectively. They lived in Paddington Sydney from about early 1840's before moving up to the Manning area some time in the 1850's although the exact time is something I am yet to determine. I just know they were fairly prominent members of the community in Manning. Joseph especially seemed to be part of every Agricultural committee and had his fingers in alot of pies so to speak. There are quite a few Manning River Times articles involving Joseph in the 1860's/70's. One tragic one was the death of JC's first wife Mary Delves who drowned in the Manning River, 5 months into their marriage. "
