He was, according information collected by myself (I don’t have a copy of his birth certificate) and according to his age engraved on his headstone, actually born 1869, more than three years after the death of his “father”, James. I have spoken with numerous elderly people around Bulahdelah who remember “Uncle Alf” well, and the story is that his real father was an itinerant accountant who used to stay at Mrs Ireland’s wine shop on occasions. Of course, this is only a story and there’s no way of verifying it now!" Note: The Ireland Family Tree has the DOB for Alfred as 3 December 1869.
