by jbbolton on Mon Jul 26, 2010 4:06 pm I have a number of convicts in my family tree, the first being Richard Cheers/Chear, a Second Fleeter who arrived in Sydney in 1790 aboard the ‘Surprise’ after the ‘Guardian’ struck an iceberg. He was pardoned when he arrived because he, and other crew members, was very helpful to Capt Riou (‘Guardian’ captain) resulting in a pardon upon his arrival. Richard was given two land grants: one at Ryde and 100 acres at Manly. Richard owned the first butcher shop in the Colony (corner of George and Hunter Streets) and his abattoirs were situated where the south pylon of the Harbour Bridge now stands. Richard had 3 wives/1 partner: 1.Mary Pratt (married 1784, Abingdon, Berkshire, England) – 1 child 2.Esther Weaver (Hester Vevers, a convict who arrived in the ‘Mary Ann’ in 1791. They married in 1895 in Sydney) – no children 3.Margaret Fogarty (a convict who arrived aboard the ‘Britannia 2’ in 1798. There was no formal marriage but the relationship began circa 1800. Margaret died in 1810 and is buried in the Old Sydney Burial Grounds, where the Town Hall now stands) – 3 children 4.Jane Ann Smith (a convict who arrived aboard the ‘Wanstead’ in 1814. They married in 1815 in Sydney – Ann and Richard are buried in Devonshire St Cemetery, under Central Railway Station) – 4 children John Cheers/Churs was a son of Richard and Margaret. John was born in 1804 and married Elizabeth Hickey in 1823 at Hexham. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Hickey (convict ‘Indefatigable’ -1815) and Ann Marks. Elizabeth died in 1831 and John remarried to Elizabeth/Eliza Ryan in 1836, Sydney. The Cheers family resided in the Hunter River Area for some years with John’s son, Allan Cheers and his wife, Lavinia Heaslip lived at Raymond Terrace, Stroud and surrounding areas. Allan and Lavinia are buried in the Raymond Terrace Pioneer Cemetery I am unable to locate any record of John’s death, possibly around 1840. If anyone can assist with information re his death it would be greatly appreciated.
