I have a lot to be thankful for in mum’s decision to return to Oxley Island as it was there that she met my father Geoffrey Newman when he came to visit a friend in 1943/44 who was the local headmaster. Geoff was a returned serviceman, he had been a Rat of Tobruk and was injured and repatriated in 1943. Dorothy was attracted to Geoff as he was both good fun and jovial, personality traits that they shared in common.

Dorothy and Geoff wed on 5th October 1946 at the Presbyterian Church Taree.

My cousins loved to visit the shop coming from Taree, Newcastle or Sydney and all affectionately referred to Dorothy as Aunty Dot. Many other relatives would also came to stay, and Dorothy as busy as she was would always still find the time to make a big pot of pea soup or dress and roast a duck. There also was always plenty of corned beef, which was cooked in the copper in the laundry, and of course Dorothy’s famous pickles.
