"There were 3 children born to John and Margaret - John Anthony 1825, Michael in 1830 and somewhere in the middle a William who appears in the Male Orphans School. There is a letter to the Colonial Secretary in 1837 saying that Margaret has been a widow for almost 2 years and was in service to a Mr dick a licensed Victualler of Clarence and could not supervise Michael. He was then admitted to the Male Orphan School and in the register I found William . Have never found his birth / baptism."

Publication: Typed document possibly 2003.

In part:

"There is also a baptism entry for M Anthony Knox and John A Knox in 1825 at St Mary’s Cathedral. This shows in NSW BDM as 2 entries for John A. I have viewed the second one of these and it is from a copy of Father Therry’s diary. There are 2 entries for the Baptism of Michael J Anthony in 1830. One of these is also the copy of Father Therry’s diary. I am unsure if there were 2 earlier children or only one. It is possible there were 2 but if so M Anthony must have died. The birth of John A in 1825 is Michael”s brother."

"The Bells took John in and virtually adopted him and took him to NZ. The Bells were pioneers in New Zealand having bought ( along with Archibald Mossman and Alexander Davison ) Mana Island from the natives in 1832. There is some evidence that John also bought land from the Maoris. Mention of John Jnr going to New Zealand on the Minerva appears in both the Sydney Morning Herald and Sydney Gazette of 9thJanuary 1837. A John Bell is also on the Minerva. From enquiries I have made, shipping lists into New Zealand for this year do not exist."
