July 1935 OBITUARY On Saturday morning the death occurred of Patrick -Upton at the Coooktown District Hospital. Deceased, who had been an inmate of the institution for the past fortnight had been brought to town from Bamboo Station, via Laura. Mr. Upton had been ill for some days (as also-was his wife and little son Pat). His condition becoming worse, a blackboy was sent to Coen with a message that Pilot McDonald be asked to come to Musgrave Station to convey the patients to Cooktown. This was done and it was hoped that under medical treatment he would rally. However, despite all the attention of the doctor and staff, Mr. Upton passed away on Saturday morning. Following receipt of a wire of her son's serious illness, Mrs. W. Upton (Mitchell) and son Tom immediately left on the long trip to Cooktown, whilst , another son , Laurie (Inglewood) joined them, but was compelled to remain in Brisbane through ill-health. On arrival at Cairns it was found that no plane or launch was available, but Mr. Simpson (Mitchell) offered to drive them to the Daintree from Cairns, to hire a launch. They left Daintree at midnight on Friday and arrived in Cooktown just before Pat passed away. Deceased is survived by his widow and two small children, the former being an inmate of the hospital. Deceased, was born at Cunnamulla 34 years ago and was educated at Mitchell and Brisbane. About seven years ago he came north with his father and had been on Bamboo Station up to the time of his illness. He married Irene Neill, daughter of Mr. E. E. Neill, of Koolburra Station. Three sisters, Mrs. D. Best and Miss Betty Upton (Mitchell) and Mrs C. Cook (Bell) and three brothers, Jack (Brisbane), Thomas (Mitchell) and Laurie (Inglewood). The cortege moved from St. Mary's Church on Saturday afternoon. Rev. Father N. McFadden, O.S.A., performing the last rites. The late Mr. Upton will be remembered as a rider at the local turf meetings, and also as an athlete. |
