James Bignall (sometimes Bignell, but never Bignold) was not born at Alverstoke. That particular Bignell never left the UK and is buried in Hampshire. There are some deliberately obscure features of James' life, but is probable that he was the ex-convict freed at Paterson in 1824, recorded in the handwritten Newcastle lists as James Bagnall. He was said to have been born in Oxfordshire. His wife Amelia Kingston was not from Bandon. She came from Rosscarbery on the coast in County Cork. Her father had previously been convicted of forging some commercial paper and was transported. He acquired the Bandon Grove estate on the Williams River, which passed to his descendents. James and Amelia Bignall's children were born before compulsory registration. The Bishop of Newcastle's baptism registers are the source for birth information, and these were transcribed some years ago, overseas, to produce the pre-registration official BDM index. There were many copying errors made by copyists unfamiliar with English names. The early originals were written up by travelling chaplains before the foundation of the see. My group, by permission of a previous Bishop, has examined the records. All are complete except for Samuel Stanley Bignall (whose page is missing). This is the spelling used by the priest (s) when writing the records - at first by George Middleton (possibly at home, but in the Christ Church books (=Newcastle Cathedral)) , and later, after the foundation of the village of Paterson, by the incumbent there (St Paul Paterson register). The Manning Pioneer list is quite wrong, as is the Family History group from Maitland. I have the baptism, marriage, census and deatth records for James Bignell of Alverstoke, who married another Amelia, but never left England. Unfortunately these bodies haven't always confirmed information they have gleaned. Bignall descendents, using both spellings, are very common in these districts. Amelia Kingston arrived at Sydney as a free passenger in the convict transport Southworth, in June 1832. She was with her mother, 2 of her sisters, and brother, who had eventually emigrated to rejoin their father, who had been earlier transported for life for forgery - altering a document. The family was conveyed to Tillimby on the Paterson River. She was baptised 13th Jan 1811 at St Fachtna's Cathedral, Ross (Rosscarbery), County Cork, her parents coming from Burgatia in Ross parish. Her birthday is not known. Ann Kingston, nee Stanley, Amelia's mother, was originally from Murragh, on the upper part of the Bandon River, and Bandon Grove was named after her death as a memorial. Amelia's older sisters had married in Ireland before her emigration. We have the records from the Diocese of Cork (nowadays Cork, Cloyne and Ross). James Bignall's marriage registration (by C P N Wilton, chaplain at Newcastle) ) gives a false age, which has confused many. His true age is known at death, which places his birthday in 1798, probably Oxfordshire, as stated by the court. His father was William. His mother's name is unknown. There were tenant cottages in the 1800's for many tenant farmers. The Atkins as well as my great great grandparents James and Amelia Garrett lived in one of these tenant cottages. "Canningalla" today is not as large as it was back then as land was sold to other farmers. The tenant cottages are no longer there but Bill Dowling showed me back in 2000 where they were. Dairy farming ceased on Canningalla 15 years before 2000. I took photos of the area but they are not digital photos. Many different families lived in this area and one of the Haggarty's was the last to dairy farm on Canningalla. The Haggarty's come into my Bland family lines. I have Louisa Atkins and her family in my tree as so many Dungog families married into each other. My great grandmother Jane Garrett was born 1859 and married 1878 on "Canningalla" in her parents cottage. In the National Library Archives in Canberra I found a book with James Dowling's title to Canningalla mentioned. He was a judge who lived in Sydney and his son ran the property. Bill Dowling has a B&B in the old house which he partly inherited from his mother or rather he purchased it after she died from his other siblings. We stayed there in 2000 and enjoyed talking family research and history as he has a book on the Dowling family history. The Dungog Chronicle began in 1888 and still publishes today. They put out a book in 1988 for their centenary and it has some interesting articles from their paper for those hundred years. I have a copy and it is available from the Dungog Chronicle Office at Dungog. Trust this gives you a little history of Canningalla. Sylvia Anderson 15 April 2008

The Bishop of Newcastle's baptism registers are the source for birth information, and these were transcribed some years ago, overseas, to produce the pre-registration official BDM index. There were many copying errors made by copyists unfamiliar with English names. The early originals were written up by travelling chaplains before the foundation of the see. My group, by permission of a previous Bishop, has examined the records. All are complete except for Samuel Stanley Bignall (whose page is missing). This is the spelling used by the priest (s) when writing the records - at first by George Middleton (possibly at home, but in the Christ Church books (=Newcastle Cathedral)) , and later, after the foundation of the village of Paterson, by the incumbent there (St Paul Paterson register). The Manning Pioneer list is quite wrong, as is the Family History group from Maitland. I have the baptism, marriage, census and deatth records for James Bignell of Alverstoke, who married another Amelia, but never left England. Unfortunately these bodies haven't always confirmed information they have gleaned. Bignall descendents, using both spellings, are very common in these districts. Amelia Kingston arrived at Sydney as a free passenger in the convict transport Southworth, in June 1832. She was with her mother, 2 of her sisters, and brother, who had eventually emigrated to rejoin their father, who had been earlier transported for life for forgery - altering a document. The family was conveyed to Tillimby on the Paterson River. She was baptised 13th Jan 1811 at St Fachtna's Cathedral, Ross (Rosscarbery), County Cork, her parents coming from Burgatia in Ross parish. Her birthday is not known. Ann Kingston, nee Stanley, Amelia's mother, was originally from Murragh, on the upper part of the Bandon River, and Bandon Grove was named after her death as a memorial. Amelia's older sisters had married in Ireland before her emigration. We have the records from the Diocese of Cork (nowadays Cork, Cloyne and Ross). James Bignall's marriage registration (by C P N Wilton, chaplain at Newcastle) ) gives a false age, which has confused many. His true age is known at death, which places his birthday in 1798, probably Oxfordshire, as stated by the court. His father was William. His mother's name is unknown. Regards, G Taylor
